Fat Around The Abdomen
Though diet and exercise have long been touted as the titans of change in the world of weight loss, some may find that these just aren’t enough to combat more stubborn fat deposits. As we age, our metabolism slows down. This can lead to our bodies storing more and more fat in places like the hips, thighs, buttocks, chest, back, and most frustratingly: the abdomen. This unwanted fat that is parked around the abdomen evolved as an extra layer of protection for our vital organs. Unfortunately, centralized fat is a primary risk factor for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.[1] If left untreated this can lead to serious health concerns. But because this fatty tissue is “put to use” by our body, deposits of fat around our midsection are often one of the last places we lose weight. This can be very disheartening for patients who have finally perfected their diet and exercise regimen. However, this doesn’t mean you should give up. For difficult problems, creative solutions are required. Liposuction technology is more advanced than ever, and an effective, long-term solution.

Benefits
Greater Fat Loss
Liposuction uses a few tiny incisions made at the base of the abdomen, and these are tiny enough that a bikini bottom can hide the evidence. Then, the VASER technology works to dislodge the fatty tissue from the connective tissue. Through ultrasound waves, the fat lobules break up and are loosened from the neighboring tissue. This allows the cannula to remove more fat cells than through traditional liposuction alone.[3]
A Quick Recovery
When the ultrasound waves dislodge the fat from the surrounding tissue, no other neighboring cells (nerves, blood vessels, or skin) are affected. This means that when the fat cells are liposculptured out, they are the only cells targeted. In traditional liposuction, the patient would experience severe bruising from more aggressive usage of the cannula. With Dr. Friedlander’s approach to VASER, patients experience less downtime than if they had undergone traditional liposuction.
Candidates
Patients who want to see just what liposuction around their abdomen can do for them need to first understand there are a couple of requirements that patients must meet to be approved for this procedure. To qualify for liposuction you must be:
- A non-smoker
- At a healthy weight/BMI
- Fit enough to undergo surgery and recovery
- Have ample skin elasticity
It is critical to note that liposuction is not a weight loss solution but rather a way to rid your frame of stubborn, hard-to-target fat deposits. Liposuction will only be elected appropriate for people who are at a healthy, stable weight, and don’t have much weight to lose (if any). To see if you qualify, visit us for a personal consultation. Please feel free to schedule your personal consultation today!
Personal Consultation in Sacramento
At our offices just northeast of Sacramento, you will meet with Dr. Friedlander at your personal consultation. Trained by the world-renowned best in the VASER approach, Dr. Friedlander has worked and studied as a surgeon for over a decade. His expertise resides in his ability to artfully sculpt away fat cells to elicit a more desirable appearance. At your consultation, we will first chronicle your medical, surgical, and prescription history. This is important because we want to understand where exactly you are in your weight loss journey and where exactly you wish to be. Then, we will take a look at your abdomen. Here we will note the density of your fatty tissue as well as the elasticity of your skin. The elasticity of your skin is important to observe because it will tell us if your skin will bounce back after the surgery. If it looks like excess laxity might be an issue, then a skin tightening procedure might be necessary in addition to the liposuction. Next, we will ask you about your lifestyle – whether you smoke, are looking to lose even more weight, or if you are struggling to maintain your current weight. All of this is important in getting a three-dimensional picture of who you are – not only as a patient, but also as a person. If you are cleared for liposuction, we will then schedule a time and date for your operation. Before you leave we will give you a list of preparatory steps. These will be individualized to your specific needs and should be ardently adhered to.
Preparation
We do ask that the few steps be followed to ensure a proper procedure and optimal recovery can ensue.
- Get your home ready for your recovery
- Schedule a ride home
- Stop smoking for two weeks before and one month after your liposuction procedure
- Come to your appointment in loose-fitting clothing
Procedure
On the day of your procedure, you will be given IV sedation that will keep you resting comfortably throughout the procedure. Using a tumescent technique, Dr. Friedlander will administer a saline solution that consists of lidocaine, local anesthetic, and epinephrine in the abdomen. This will help to promote less bleeding, swelling, and bruising which will result in a smoother recovery. Next, he will use the VASER technology on the abdomen. This will break up the fat deposits, dislodging them from the wall, making them easier to extract with a cannula. Once all the targeted fat cells are extracted, he will close the small incisions. Then, you will be able to return home to focus on healing and recovery.
Recovery
For the first one to two weeks you may be sore due to the swelling and bruising around your midsection. This is completely normal. During this time you may be required to wear a compression garment around your stomach. It should be worn at all times, only to be removed when bathing. This will help control the swelling and shape the treated areas. If your job involves non-strenuous activity then you can plan to return to work about a week after. Most of our patients report feeling fully recovered around the 4-6 week mark.
Results
At your follow-ups, Dr. Friendlander will remove your compression garment and you’ll be able to see your new abdomen emerging! You’ll be able to appreciate the sleek, slender outline of your midsection and the contoured ridges in your six-pack. All of this was hidden before your liposuction procedure, but now you will be able to see the results of all your hard work! By continuing a proper diet and exercise, you will be able to continue enjoying your results.
Corresponding & Complementary Procedures
If you are interested in contouring another area of your body after your liposuction procedure, then you are just in luck! NorCal Liposculpture offers services that can target some of the most common trouble spots on the body.
EMSCULPT
Like liposuction, EMSCULPT can help you lose fat around your abdomen, however it can also help build muscle in that area. It works by stimulating over 20,000 contractions per session, and is an excellent way to tone and strengthen the abdominal muscles. These contractions are the same as the ones achieved in the gym every time a rep is performed. But, really, when was the last time you felt like doing 20,000 sit-ups?
Juvederm
With the wide array of Juvederm products, we can help accentuate, erase, and contour just about any facial feature. Juvederm works by injecting the skin with a specially formulated version of naturally occurring hyaluronic acid. This chemical works to bind with the moisture under the skin, and expands the recessed areas of the skin, erasing the fine lines and wrinkles.
